Flames crackled merrily
in the cosy log fire;
bathing the room in a warm glow.
A small child,
her tiny face sprinkled with freckles,
sat,
gazing from the frosty window;
eyes wide, with simple wonder
at the wintry ballet performed
for her delight.
Tiny dots in the sky,
tumbled gently;
delicate snow flakes,
serenading her
with their slow graceful dance,
before settling -
a dusty white blanket on the ground.
The child’s eyelids grew heavy;
lulled by the warmth of the room,
she curled up on the window seat
and lapsed into peaceful slumber.
